It’s that time of year when even the sprightliest of early birds fails to see the point of getting up. Why would you leave the cosy comfort of your Siberian goose down duvet when the tube is borked, students are running amok, and there’s a foot of snow leaning precariously off window sills.
And the boiler’s on the blink.
Much as I love frolicking in the snow and the crisp, cool air of true northern European winters, my inner African Eve is screaming for some vitamin D at this time of year. I can be up at 5am no problem during summertime but each morning now feels like a battle. In full-fledged hibernation mode this Scandi needs some sort of respite from the dog days of November and early December, which is why I’ll be temporarily emigrating to California for the entire month of November 2011.
Lo and behold, some part of your brain tells you to get over yourself, stop daydreaming about rollerblading around Santa Monica pier and moaning endlessly about the demented boiler, and just get on with the day.
Porridge usually does the trick, and I’ve been raiding Waitrose for Rude Health’s four scrumptious varieties but some mornings a zingy smoothie is really what’s called for.
Fire up all cylinders with this humdinger of a ginger, orange, lemon and banana smoothie, enriched with ultra virtuous manuka honey, plain wholemilk or Greek yoghurt (no lowfat nonsense please) and if you really want to beef it up – a few rolled oats. If this doesn’t keep you fighting fit, well then I’m afraid it’s California Dreamin’ for both of us dude.
Smoothie for 2 people:
- 1 banana
- 200g plain whole milk or Greek yoghurt
- Juice of 2-3 oranges (keep some zest for extra citrus flavour and garnish)
- Juice of 1-2 lemons (I like this quite tart)
- Finely grated ginger to your taste (I use about 1 1/2 cm)
- pinch of cinnamon
- 1-2 tbsp rolled oats (optional)
- 1 heaping teaspoon or more of manuka +20 strength honey
Blitz it all with a hand held blender or in an actual blender. Drink immediately for full fortifying effect!
